Pastor Jaylon Calhoun is a Richmond, CA native. He started singing at the age of 7 when he attended Malcolm X Performing Art Academy in Berkeley, CA. Then, at the age of 14, he joined his first church, Antioch Church Family, in Antioch CA. He joined the church's choir and sung with that choir for 7 years. While on, that choir won a few awards, like the Bay Area Award in 2007, and then the How Sweet The Sound, hosted by Donald Lawrence and Verizon. They won Best Small Choir in the Bay Area in 2008. I was born and raised in New York City in a conservative Christian home. Art has always been my passion, and as I got older poetry became a tool in which I also expressed myself. At the age of 19 I strayed from God which led me to a dark and lonely place. Ironically it was then that I began to write spoken word as a way to pour my heart out, or some may say, a way to ask for help. But God's hand is never too short to save, and after going through several trials He came and saved me from the enemy's grasp. I came back to Christ at the age of 26 making God a promise, that I'd never leave & that I'd do everything I could to help youth not make the mistakes I made. I began to tell my testimony through spoken word and eventually I was invited to several churches to bring my poetry. I started leading worship around age 18 or 19. My sisters and I grew up in  church, and so had my parents. At age 10, I had my first legit encounter with the Holy Spirit at a youth camp way out in the country. I didn't really understand. It was my first personal encounter with God, but it marked me. We had always been a musical family, and I picked up the guitar right as I started college which was brand new to me, s I'd only been a singer up until that point. I'd pick up things from other players, move around the dorm in the evenings, jamming, just trying to grind my way to at least a basic level of skill. It was still early on learning guitar when my brother in law, a fantastic musician and vocalist, asked me to lead worship for him in an emergency. I could barely play and sing at the same time. I never was in the street, never went to the club. I was raise in the church. My life was based on living for God or live for the world, and I chose to living for God when I was eight years old. My momma was diagnosed with breast cancer I almost thought I would lose her, but the more I prayed, the more God had healed her body. She was healed from cancer in 2008. We Are The Wave Compilation Album was an idea that I had about two years ago. I had the idea but I didn’t really have the means nor the resources to do it. I was new to networking in CHH and I didn’t have any artists to do the project with. Last year we added a couple new artists and that’s when I realized this project as possible. It’s basically an introduction to New Wave Music Group. Also to encourage the youth to let them know they don’t have to be what society tells them to be. They can forge their own path and do something bigger than themselves. I started New Wave to give the average local artist a voice. It’s a diverse team from all over the World.
