"Symbol" featured in #LOV3RZ Magazine October! We reviewed his song "Spirit Man"
Derick Johnson who goes by the stage name Symbol, was raised in North Carolina and has been rapping since 2003. He came up with the name Symbol by wanting to stand for something and that something was a consciousness and awareness in the Hip-Hop genre. What began as writing poetry, then free-styling with a friend, turned into a passion for making music and delivering a positive message. His music focuses on God, encouragement, and those who have persevered. "I tell stories and my songs always have a message", it's my signature trait." Symbol tends to not write club songs, "maybe I will one day but so far God hasn't led me to necessarily go in that direction." Symbol was influenced by a lot of secular artists growing up, but as a Christian in his spirit he knew their subject matter was not what God wanted him to rap about and he felt it was sinful. As a Christian rapper, his goal is to help bridge the large gap between Christian Hip-Hop and secular music.
